E as consequências...( ? ? ? )
Caros Irmãos e Compatriotas,

ALEXANDRA KIRK: The Prime Minister still hasn't spoken to her counterpart Xanana Gusmao.
JULIA GILLARD: Obviously the President of East Timor indicated a preparedness to have the conversation. I'll speak to the Prime Minister of East Timor during the course of this week about the preparedness to have the conversation.
ALEXANDRA KIRK: Tony Abbott says it's a big faux pas.
TONY ABBOT: The Prime Minister should have known that if you wanted to do a deal with East Timor, you have to do it with the government and not just with the President. And look, for all of Kevin Rudd's faults, at least he knew something about foreign policy, which plainly the new Prime Minister doesn't.
ALEXANDRA KIRK: Simon Crean sprung to his leader's defence.
SIMON CREAN: The advice to us was that the initiation for this had to be through the President. That's what we've done. Let's wait and see how it develops rather than assume it's going to unravel.
ALEXANDRA KIRK: Julia Gillard's keen to hammer home border protection.
JULIA GILLARD: I don't think anybody would dispute the expertise of President Ramos-Horta in all things East Timorese. The man's devoted his life to ensuring that country enjoyed freedom and democracy and he said that he believes it's appropriate to have the conversation.
ALEXANDRA KIRK: But the Opposition Leader's locked on to another target.
TONY ABBOTT: They thought they could make the Kevin Rudd the scapegoat for their incompetence but we are already seeing new and striking examples of incompetence under Julia Gillard.
ALEXANDRA KIRK: The Prime Minister insists her East Timor solution is on the way to being realised.
JULIA GILLARD: There have been suggestions in the past about a regional processing centre. What's new is my determination to achieve this. What's new is my determination to relentlessly pursue it.
TONY ABBOTT: Frankly, we have amateurs running the Australian Government. A Prime Minister who makes what purports to be a major announcement depending upon the agreement of a foreign government before she's even got that agreement, before she's even properly consulted with that government, is a Prime Minister who doesn't really know what she's doing. It's as simple as that.
ALEXANDRA KIRK: The Greens leader Bob Brown is exasperated by all the talk of asylum seekers. For him it's a case of a pox on both your houses. First, Julia Gillard.
BOB BROWN: I frankly think it's pretty appalling that the leader of the richest nation in our region, Australia, is asking the leaders of the poorest nation in our region, East Timor, to take the burden of processing asylum seekers in our region.
ALEXANDRA KIRK: Senator Brown objects to Tony Abbott's description of asylum seekers who arrive by boat as a peaceful invasion, saying the comments are xenophobic and bigoted.
BOB BROWN: You sometimes think that Pauline Hanson hasn't gone at all. She's alive and well and she's moved up the power base. She's just not there physically. She's there in spirit.
That's a very tough thing to say but this is the reality of this debate that's taking place in the run to this election.
