However, the next questions to be asked is the purpose of the MARCHA DA PAZ

By Dionisio Pereira*

People must be tired reading the news all but the same story line about politic, politic, politic and politic again. However, the next questions to be asked is the purpose of the "MARCHA DA PAZ"

1. Would the peace rally in the end create jobs for people or result in more killing, bloodshed and destructions with ordinary people are the victims?

2. Does the peace rally in the end intend to mobilize people to go to rural areas to engage in intensive agricultural production (forget about exports) but at least for people to have three meals a day; get access to clean water and supply 24 hours electricity for every rural household; good health and education system to every timorese; fix the road and sewerage and stop animals (goats, pigs, cows-you name it) roaming around at least in the capital of Dili not to mention in he districts.

3. Is peace rally led by Fretilin intended to bring current government down and later turn Timor into another Singapore type of city or another failed state in South East Asia as long as their objective is acheived.

4. Marcha Da Paz or Marcha da ....??? you guess! The situation in East-Timor has been stable by far, why should we need another peace rally. It is just creating another confusing for our people. Instead of educating our people about being responsible citizens, we lead the people of Timor into a dark path and remain under developed.

Here I would like to state my opinions:

They had given trust by the people during the last five years to rule the government and improve the lifelihood of every Timorese, but the people were betrayed and the trust was misused by them. The historic party was highjacked by certain individuals, who lost touch with people in the grassroot levels, to advance their ambitions by arguing themselves to be "Mother Terese" who could lift people out of poverty and misery. Instead of giving people with hope and good living standars, they messed up the country by creating east versus west; brainwashing police and the army to fight for their cause; distribting guns to civilians among others. If you happened to visit some rural areas in the country, some people start feel nostaligic about life during the indonesian time. Did people wrongly voted overwhelmingly for independence in 1999? or does this sense of disappointement purely created by our current leaders who themselved failed our people.

We can not judge the success of a government witin one year. However, after five year of ruling, at least you could get some clear pictures about how the government has performed whethet it has abiility to change the living condition of the people from worse to better or other way around. People brought down Fretilin from power in 2006 because they were sick and tired with the system which was business oriented in favor of families, friends/cronies. The intention of my writiing is not to argue that AMP is better than Fretilin. Being a person who was also victim of 2006 crisis, I did not support any politcal party nor did I support the ruling government. To me, what important is that as long as they could give people hope and lift them out of vicious cycle of poverty - they could earn my trust.

So if Fretilin wants to regain confidence from the people in the next five years, it is time to stop calling for Anticipated Election, Marcha da Paz and preacing about changing the goverment. What they can do is to sit back, relax and enjoy the flight with the AMP government. It is time to go back to their contituents and say "sorry" for the sin they have committed and promise not repeat again. Stop calling themselves the one who liberated the country, and citing the easterners fought for independence and the westerners did not because all of these jargons in end create mind boggling and mumbo jumbo with no amount of scientific research to prove. Ask people what agenda the people expected Fretilin wants to implement if won in the next election, not what Fretilin intended to implement.

AMP's right to rule this time also comes with responsbilities. They must also learn from mistakes left by the previous goverrnment by working hard to improve their image and gain trust from the people. However, if they continue to follow the path of the previous government by engaging themselves in unlawfull activities which in the end harm the people, they will face the consequence in the next election in 2012.

So let's hope for the best!
